APPEARANCE •
Lyn is pale for the Water Nation, her skin more white than tan. Her hair, jet black and straight, grew down to her waist. However, on the night of her escape from the Northern tribe, Lyn cut it to just below her ears, making her one of the few people in the Northern Tribe to have short hair. Her face is very delicate, her chin more pointed than most and her nose rather smaller than her parents’. Lyn has dark blue eyes, rimmed in a blueish gray. Her build is very slim and graceful, making it easy for her to move quickly and fluidly, as Waterbending requires. Lyn smiles often, but she has no dimples. Lyn is pretty, more because she is so confident and comfortable with herself than because of her looks. Lyn's right arm is heavily scarred- the memento of a painful expirience with a stray cat. Lyn's torso and limbs are also normally patterned with bruises- proof that she isn't afraid to fight. Lyn's left big toe is longer than her right, her fingers are always cold, and her lips are often chewed up (one of her bad habits is lip-biting). Lyn also likes to leave her hair down, and, more often than not, unbrushed. Several attempts to cut it off have resulted in her having very unevenly cut hair. Lyn's middle left finger will not straighten at the second joint, as it was broken several years ago.
` PERSONALITY •[/b] The three best words to describe Lyn overall are: Energetic, determined, and positive. [/blockquote][/blockquote]Lyn is a very easy sort of person to be around. She speaks her mind often, and is not afraid to give orders. Her greatest wish is to leave the Northern Tribe and explore the world, but her parents are firmly against the idea and forbade her from leaving. Lyn is so sure of herself she feels no regret about leaving anyway. She is also very capable and firm- she would not stop hanging around the Waterbending classes until the Master agreed to teach her. Lyn shows great talent with her bending, but often uses it for trivial pranks and mischief. Lyn is very determined, and once she sets her mind on something, she refuses to let it go. When she has the bit between her teeth, Lyn keeps her thoughts more to herself, which is normally how her parents know she is up to something. Lyn is also fiercely loyal. Any friend she makes is automatically under her protection, or so she thinks. Lyn is not afraid of fighting and is known to have thrashed several local boys with her bending. However energetic Lyn seems, she is not the sort of person who flares up quickly and down just as quickly. Lyn has a constant energy that makes her an overall cheery person, but the same energy contributes to some rather more unpleasant attributes. Her temper is easily provoked and difficult to settle- she is very touchy. Lyn's temper is also a problem. She is easily offended and has something of a talent for holding a grudge. Lyn is rarely ever patient, especially when she gets the idea to do something. Lyn's determination is often a problem, as she refuses to accept anything but the best she can give. Lyn pushes herself too hard, and she does not understand her own limits. She believes that she can learn everything, and what she doesn't know, she insists on learning. Since she is determined to know everything, Lyn is often described as nosy.
` HISTORY •
Lyn is a princess in the Northern Water Tribe, whose endeavors to go adventuring over the years have all met with failure. Her mother expects a great deal from her, and her father only wants her to marry well. Lyn, faced with many marriage proposals, has denied them all in one way or another. When Lyn was five, she first came to the Waterbending training grounds and demanded that she be allowed to learn. The sexist ideas of previous Masters had passed on to the current one, named Nen, and he refused. Undeterred, Lyn learned what she could from watching, and hung around the grounds until she was literally taken away. Finally Nen gave in and, without a word about it, began to teach her bending. Lyn’s desire to learn and boundless energy helped her to become one of the kingdom’s best warriors, though she was not allowed to fight. Nen soon became Lyn’s most trusted friend and advisor. When Nen disappeared, Lyn saw little reason to remain in the city and began plans to leave, preparing to track him down and rescue him if possible.
Lyn’s childhood has been… colorful, to say the least. She has spent a great deal of her time exploring the city in and out, making friends with any number of well-to-do children and street kids alike. Lyn is devoted to learning everything she can, and spends a great deal of time in the libraries, the training grounds, and also (when she can sneak in) the local pubs, not to drink, but to listen to the stories the elders tell. Lyn’s infallible determination and boundless energy have helped her to rise to many challenges and set aside many gender discriminations. Far from making enemies, however, many of the people of the Northern Tribe look up to her as an excellent future leader. Lyn has no interest in ruling, being far more interested in having adventures outside of the Northern Tribe. Her escape attempts prior to the successful one number forty-three, ranging from when she was six to sixteen. Attempts have included trying to stow away in the cargo holds of trade ships (as soon as she was discovered missing, the ships would be searched), trying to "borrow" a visiting airbender’s flying bison to fly away (the bison wouldn't move and she was caught), and using her waterbending to walk over the water and out of the city (she nearly caught pneumonia). This sort of boundless energy has created more than a few new safety regulations in the city. Lyn’s energy has also manifested itself in considerably more naughty behavior, such as using her bending to make ice for the guards to slip on, putting eels in her maids’ beds, and stealing the key to the Throne Room, leaving the king and queen to hold council elsewhere. Lyn's determination and (would-be) toughness has also led her to make some pretty stupid decisions about herself. The most appropriate example is that whenever Lyn injures herself, she refuses to see a healer. Although her friends and family urge her to do so, Lyn protests that she "needs to know I can be tough enough to deal with this". Because of this thickheadedness, Lyn's injuries have healed slowly or sloppily, leaving her with patterns of scars and bruises all over her body. Normally this wouldn't be as much of an issue, execpt Lyn has a gift for attracting trouble, starting fights, and tripping over herself. She insists that injuries aren't as bad as they seem, and likes it when she's bruised because her skin turns interesting colors and shapes. This exasperates most of her friends.
However many friends Lyn has made, her only close friend over the years has been Nen. Nen, far from being a father figure, is more of a mentor. Lyn jokingly refers to him as her partner-in-crime, cohort, collaborator, and co-conspirator. Nen has her trust more than anyone else, and Lyn, though she tries to hide it, looks up to and respects him even more than her father. Nen, however brusque and unapproachable he may seem, has proved a perfect foil for Lyn’s cheerful energy. Lyn, after having known Nen for 12 years, can understand him extremely well, so that she no longer is put off by his bristly rebuffs. The only points they have disagreed on are the duties of women in the Tribe, and Lyn’s desire to leave. Nen is a strong advocate of duty- he believes that, no matter how she wishes she were somewhere else, Lyn has a duty to her people to remain in the city. Lyn just wants to have adventures.
Although Lyn has been learning for many years, Nen goes slower than she would like him to teach. He believes that whatever she does, she should do perfectly, and drills her in the same movements over and over. Lyn, who is frustrated by going slowly, tends to demonstrate her impatience when she doesn't do the drills right. Lyn is desperate to learn more, but believes Nen is holding her back. All the same, she is very fond of the grizzly old man.
